September ended for us with an ‘out of the norm’ steel frame structure project for our client, Martin Collins Equestrian South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
Martin Collins is an international company specialising in the laying down of synthetic surface tracks on race courses, as well as on show and dressage arenas around the world. They have formulated many tracks to accommodate the different needs of each equine discipline, making them the South African forerunners in this speciality.
Martin Collins is laying a poly track alongside the existing Greyville Racecourse grass track. This is to cope with Greyville’s increased race schedule, a result of the recent closing of Clairwood. In essence, the existing track has been divided into two, and one of them will be surfaced with the Polytrack materials.
Our mandate was to erect a steel structure for Martin Collins so they could mix the ingredients of the poly track materials under cover. The mixing shed is a character, a ‘pre-loved’, non-permanent shed that was last used for the mixing of the poly track at Fairview Race Track, Port Elizabeth. The columns were secured on steel plates and, after bracing the first frame, our team successfully managed to erect and sheet under very windy and rainy conditions.
Once Martin Collins has completed the track in April/May, Rig-Tech was commissioned to disassemble the steel structure.
