Rotary dairies appeal to farmers because of high throughput – which, in the case of a 60-stall rotary, can be as high as 450 cows per hour. With a rotary, you can keep a constant flow of cows moving through the system.
The math is simple – the less time your cows are in the dairy shed, the more time they are feeding. More food equals more milk equals higher profits.
The benefits of a rotary dairy
Employees who have worked in other types of dairy parlours, often say they don’t want to go anywhere else after having worked in a rotary dairy. Working with the cows is straightforward, the cows are more relaxed and therefore the job is easier.
A big advantage of a rotary is the fixed routine – for the cows and for the staff. A cow is stepping onto the milking platform and into a stall every 10 – 12 seconds, depending on how fast the milking platform is turning. This ensures maximum productivity from your staff, as they are ‘forced’ to work on a strict clock.
Rotary dairies are particularly well suited to large milking herds.
A rotary parlour is best suited to a milking herd of 250 cows minimum. Significant productivity gains are made on dairy farms with 500 or more milking cows.
